The Green Thumb Program distributes free seeds and plants to 1,100 households in Knoxville and Knox County each year. Qualified applicants receive twelve types of vegetable seeds and nine tomato plants (six beefsteak and three cherry tomatoes) and nine pepper plants (six California Wonder bell peppers and three cayenne peppers). Recipients also receive gardening and nutrition information. Sign up begins in February and goes as long as supplies last.
